The State Of Air travel | Print |
ImageFor most vacations, the chosen mode of transport can impact the overall cost of your vacation. It will also determine where you want to go and what duration. Today, air travel remain the most popular mode of transport. Most destinations are now accessible by air travel.

However, with the many airlines, routes, larger crowd, higher security and often delays, choosing which airline and route can get quite complicating. There are of course ways to make life easier. Despite upgrades to passenger meals and in-flight entertainment, studies have shown that people choose airlines for their punctuality record and their favorable departure times.

Direct Flights Preferred

Most people prefer, where possible, a flight that involves few or no inter-connections. This can restrict your choice of air travel as these direct non-stop services are only offered by major US and UK airlines, and rarely by smaller carriers. However, in the coming years, we will see many changes in the airline travel industry. We can expect more choices than ever before. The increasing number of direct services from many US cities gives the traveler a much better choice.

AOAG, the official airline guide for the USA, offers one of the best source to do your search for the most appropriate airline and route. The AOAG is mainly used by the industry. Understanding its information format and codes can be quite confusing. For example, many airlines have 'code-sharing'. The same flight number does not necessary mean the same plane or even the same airline anymore, so it pays to check carefully when considering all possibilities of air travel.

Safety Standard Concern

You will find that there are hundreds of airlines to choose from. But some may adopt a lower safety standards and maintenance procedures than the major international airlines, so one has to be careful. Some domestic airlines in Asia, for instance, have been known to have rather poor safety records. This has cause much concern, as air travel to these countries seem to be expanding. In the former Soviet Union, there is now a proliferation of new carriers, raising eyebrows about the different safety measures that they adhere to. Many of these airlines compete on price, so one has to be careful which airline you choose. Some may prefer to pay a little more and enjoy some peace of mind and a greater degree of reliability if you opt for air travel.

On the other hand, some airlines from developing countries can have excellent in-flight service, but when it comes to booking and reservation, it may be a little unreliable. It is advisable that when booking tickets for air travel within these countries, never attempt to make the booking by phone. It is much better to visit the airline’s office and get the staff to validate the ticket in front of you. Always check and double-check your reservation, as mistakes can often happen.

Terrorism Concern

One other concern amongst air travellers is terrorism, since the several recently reported events involving security risks. While statistically, such incidents are rare, it is still a concern of many. The best advice is to take note of any airlines or airports that appear to be particularly vulnerable and avoid them. For example, the security situation in the Middle East is a major concern. Airlines flying to and from the area, have recently stepped up their security checks. Today, the air travel industry is required to have a higher level of security measures. Fortunately, most countries around the world have responded swiftly.
